¡ Konko Church Welcomes Foreign Dignitaries

The Rt. Rev. Tatsuo Miyake met former United States President Jimmy Carter in Tokyo in March, 1998. The Konko Church of Izuo and the Carter Center have had close relations for many years.Jimmy Carter has been a well-known human rights campaigner. In 1979,H.E. President Carter invited religious leaders from the WCRP, including the Most Rev. Toshio Miyake to the White House. In 1991, in the wake of the Gulf War, President Carter came and lectured at the Izuo Church in Osaka. At a Tokyo hotel. the Rt. Rev. Tatsuo Miyake spoke with President Carter about the political situations in Kosovo and the Balkans, the food aid issue for North Korea, and health problems effecting parts of Africa.




On September 23, 1999, Dr. A.T. Ariyaratne, President of the Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement, Sri Lanka, paid a visit to the Konko Church of Izuo. Dr. Ariyaratne's organization works for village development and social development in his home country. He delivered a message of condolence on the passing of the Most Rev. Toshio Miyake.

Three Bosnia and Herzegovina religious leaders recently met in Tokyo and expressed ways in which religions could help keep the peace in the Balkan area. Reisu-l-Ulema Mustafa Ceric of the Islamic Community, Metropolitan Nikolaj Mrdja of the Serbian Orthodox Church, and Vinko Cardinal Puljic of the Roman Catholic Church warmly greeted each other. The Rt. Rev. Tatsuo Miyake stated that this is an example of how Japan can use its religious role to help bring different leaders together away from the pressure of their rival communities. ¡The Most Rev. Tatsuo Miyake Meets Wahid, the President of Indonesi

Newly-elected Indonesian President H.E.Dr. Abdurrahman Wahid has met twice recently with the Most Rev. Tatsuo Miyake. On November 16, 1999, Wahid took time to exchange ideas with the Most Rev. Miyake. They discussed the necessity for creating both inter-religious and intra-faith dialogue. A week later they continued their important discussions in Jordan at the ocasion of the WCRP Assembly.
